Thrifty Thursdays - File Folder Mini

It's Thrifty Thursday again!  I made this week's project out of some file folders that I got from the dollar store (but are available at office supply stores or walmart).  I plan on doing a tutorial for it next week so be sure to check back for that!  I would have taken pictures as I made it but I spent the first 30 minutes folding and cutting folders until I found a way to make a book!

THRIFTY THURSDAY NEWS:
I have decided that the last Thursday of the month will be be reader submitted projects.  So if you are thrifty and have a project you have made send me an email at burstsofcreativity(at)yahoo.com with a link to a blog post with your project.  (it doesn't have to be on a Thursday).  Please only submit projects that have been completed in the last month.  By submitting your project you are giving me permission to use your photos.  I will use one photo and link back to your blog (more traffic for you!).  Please send me the links by Tuesday April 26th. Depending on how many submissions I get I may not be able to feature everyone.  I am looking forward to seeing what kinds of thrifty projects you have been creating!

Thrifty Thursdays - Badge Holder Mini

Today's thrifty thursday project is a mini album made out of a package of 10 badge holders.  I got these at the dollar tree but they are also available at Walmart and any of the office supply stores.

For this mini I cut paper down to 3.5x2.5" (which also happens to be ATC size for all you ATC makers!).  I only used one sheet of paper per sleeve because the sleeves were a little tight.  I also alternated between putting the photos directly on the paper and in the sleeve and gluing the photos on top of the sleeve.  This allowed me to make my pages more dimensional without having to worry about whether or not they would fit.  Note: the dollar tree holders had a slight blue tint to them - you may be able to find them in clear somewhere else.  But hey they were only a dollar!

Thrifty Thursdays - Bingo Mini

It's Thrifty Thursday and I'm back with another mini book (I think I'm going through a phase).  This one is made out of a Bingo game I found at the Dollar Tree.

I didn't take photos for a tutorial but here is a quick run down on how I made it: The Bingo cards were already attached (they were perforated so you could tear them apart before you played with them). And they came in twos - one strip of green and one in red (so you could make two books out of this!)  I chose the green ones and kept them attached.  I then cut strips of patterned paper and glued them to the back side of the bingo cards (this will help keep them together).  Once the glue was dry I folded the bingo cards accordion style.  I added mats and decorated the front and there you have it!

I still have to add photos - I think I might add some from my mom, sister and nephew's visit!

Thrifty Thursdays - Makeup Mini

Today is the first Thrifty Thursday! After the success of last week's dollar store crafts I have decided to bring it back as a weekly post.  Thrifty Thursdays will be a series of craft tutorials featuring items found at the dollar store or Target dollar spot (or anywhere else I found cheap items to craft with!) Today's craft is a mini album made out of a makeup compact.  I found this one at the dollar tree. I saw this idea in a book years ago - I can't remember exactly where or even how they made it so the idea is only semi original:

Tutorial:
1.  First clean out the makeup from the compact. Find a circle punch that punches circles to fit in the compact.  (Mine was 2 1/4") Punch 8 circles. Line four of the circles up and place tape in the center of each circle.
2. Lay a piece of ribbon over the tape running through the center of the circles (leaving only a small piece of ribbon in between circles) Adhere a second circle on top of each of the original circles.  This creates the base of your mini album.
3. Adhere the circle on the far left to the bottom of the compact so that it won't come out.  Trim any overhanging ribbon.
4. On the circle on the far right fold over the ribbon and staple.  Trim off any excess ribbon.  This creates a handle so you can pull the mini out. The circles are stored accordion style in the compact.
5.  Embellish as desired. I put photos on one side of the circles and left the others blank for journaling (except for the one that lands on top) I used a circle punch to punch the photos and the patterned paper that covers the mirror and top of the compact.
NOTE: If I did this project again I would somehow incorporate ribbon on the outside so that it tied closed.  The compact is pretty shallow and mine as it is just barely locks but any extra items and it wouldn't have - it would have been better to have that tie to keep it closed.

And remember today is your last chance to enter my giveaway.  Check it out here and come back tomorrow to see who won!

Week of Dollar Store Crafts - Farmer's Market Binder

Today is the last day of my week of dollar store projects! I hope you have enjoyed following along! This week was so successful that I think I will be bringing it back once a week - Dollar Store Thursdays - sounds good right? My final project is by far my favorite. This project was made out of a small binder - it was hideous shiny black but it had tabbed pages and lined notebook paper - a total score!

Week of Dollar Store Crafts - Sewing Kit

While I was preparing for my little blog project walking up and down the aisles of the dollar tree I was trying to find something different and unique to alter - something I hadn't seen before. Then I found this:

Week of Dollar Store Crafts - Notebook

It's day 3 of my week of dollar store crafts and today I am going with something pretty simple. I know this has been done before (my mom made my sister and I a bunch of these for Christmas) but I think its such a cute and fast project that it was worth including. These make great gifts or would be great project to add some personality to your child's notebooks before the first day of school!

Week of Dollar Store Crafts - Matchboxes

It's day 2 of my week of dollar store projects and today I am making over matchboxes. These cute little boxes would be great for storing bits of ephemera and supplies or add a little note or gift and give to someone special. So many possibilities with this one!

Sneak Peek

If you have been following the blog you know I like trying to find items at the dollar store to transform into fun crafty projects. So yesterday I went on a dollar store shopping spree - well it was the dollar store so it was like a $15 spree but still. Next week I am planning a week of dollar store projects (with tutorials) on the blog. And to give you a little taste here is a sneak peek of one of the projects:
